‘Mobile drivers’ tough to book
Driving while talking on cellphones forms a large chunk of the cases
Hyderabad: Of the huge number of traffic violation cases in the city, driving while talking on cellphones forms a large chunk of the cases, though the offenders are hardly booked.
This is primarily due to the difficulty in clicking images of the violation, especially in moving vehicles.
Also, most violators are four-wheeler drivers, but the photographs that are clicked from the side, do not capture the vehicle numbers, making it difficult to nail them. Out of the total 2,69,382 traffic violation cases recorded in January, only 1,601 were for cellphone driving.
Again in February, out of 2,70,428 cases, 1,676 were booked for cellphone driving, while in March, 1,946 such cases were booked out of 2,86,194 cases. In April, 1,836 were recorded out of the total 2,80,054 cases. The traffic police has an internal policy that a mandatory image has to go along with each case of violation.
This limits the cases being booked for cellphone driving. “Cellphone driving, especially in case of four-wheelers, becomes difficult to record electronically as the violation has to be captured from the side, but it does not allow visibility of the number plate to identify the vehicle. It is being done mostly by contact enforcement,” said additional CP (traffic), Mr Jitender.
