Take Karnataka to Supreme Court for polluting Cauvery: M. Karunanidhi
Chennai: DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday expressed shock over media reports that Karnataka was discharging sewer into Cauvery. He demanded the Tamil Nadu government to take up the issue with the Supreme Court at the earliest considering the threat to the public who used the water for irrigation and drinking purposes. It may be noted that DC recently reported on how Karnataka was discharging it’s sewer into the river.
Expressing anguish over the recent admission of Karnataka minor irrigation minister Shivaraj’s statement in the legislative council that 148 crore litres of Bengaluru’s sewage was let into the neighbouring state on a daily basis through its rivers and canals, Karunanidhi in a statement explained that Karnataka was alone responsible for making Cauvery river into a sewerage. Emphasising that local farmers depending on Cauvery had described the neighbouring state’s action ‘treason’, he said there was an immediate need to look into the issue as the findings of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board showed the pollutants in the river were 10 times more than the prescribed standards.
The statement also added that the colour of the water in Mettur dam had changed. Consuming that water can cause diseases like typhoid and hepatitis, Mr Karunanidhi cautioned.
