According to the Railway Police, the robbers halted the train by flashing a red signal.
The robbers put a few one rupee coins at a juncture where two railways tracks meet, near an automatic traffic signalling system, which then flashed the signal.
The train driver stopped the train.

When the train stopped, sub-inspector Bhavannarayana who was on duty began searching compartments in the train.
