Chennai: DMK president M. Karunanidhi’s elder sister Shanmugasundarathammal passed away here on Wednesday morning. She was 99 and was suffering from geriatric problems for some time. She breathed her last at her Gopalapuram residence, DMK party sources said.
Mr Karunanidhi along with his wife Dayalu Ammal paid homage.Shanmugasundarathammal was the mother of the late Union minister ‘Murasoli’ Maran and is survived by another son ‘Murasoli’ Selvam.
M.K. Stalin, M.K. Azhagiri, Kanimozhi, Rajathi Ammal and other relatives paid homage. In a statement, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said the demise of Shanmugasundarathammal was a huge loss to DMK leader Karunanidhi as she played a major role in addressing the family issues in the DMK’s first family. BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan also expressed her condolences.
