Bengaluru: When he was a young student, he sold flowers along with his mother to earn their livelihood. His father, who is an attender at a private college, was not in a position to bear the educational expenses of his two sons, who are good in studies.

The florist-student, A.S. Abhilash, created history recently by securing seven gold medals in BE (E&E) in the exams conducted by the prestigious Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).

On Tuesday, the management of Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT), where Abhilash pursued his BE, felicitated him for his achievement despite difficulties. “When I was in sixth semester, my father was diagnosed with cancer. By the time I reached VIII semester, he passed away. Financial condition of the family was very bad. Still my mother Sunanda wanted me to crack the BE exams with flying colours. When I was selling flowers in childhood, she wanted me to pursue my higher education in engineering and secure ranks. Today, I am happy that I have madder her proud,” he said.

“Both I and my brother, Nagarjun, wanted to crack IAS. Our father wanted us to become IAS officers. Right now, I am working with Bescom to support my brother and help him prepare for the IAS. Later, I will pursue my dream,” he said.
