Woman gets Rs 20,000 for defective frying pans
Chennai: A woman who purchased non-stick frying pans, attracted by advertisements on television, was taken for a ride by a teleshopping company. Despite repeated requests, the teleshopping company, RP Telebuy Skyshop Pvt Ltd, Spencers’ Plaza, Chennai, which supplied defective frying pans, refused to address her grievances.
In a petition submitted to the district consumer disputes redressal forum, Chennai (south), Ms Nandini Sekar, Mylapore, stated that she had purchased three non-stick pans for Rs 6,500 from RP Telebuy Skyshop. The payment was made with a credit card on February 5, 2013.Four days later, she received the pans. Even though she used the pans by following the procedure mentioned in the manual, she found the utensils were defective and oil and fat stuck to the pans de spite cleaning.
Immediately, she alerted the customer care service centre. An expert from the company who examined the products agreed that they were defective. The company promised to replace them. However, despite several requests, the products were not replaced and, hence, she issued a notice on March 13, 2013. She contended that the act of the company amounted to deficiency in service and caused her mental agony. She sought a direction to the company to refund the Rs 6,500 and pay a compensation of Rs 25,000.
Despite several notices, the company did not appear before the forum. The bench, comprising president B. Ramalingam and members K. Amala and L. Deenadayalan, said the act of the company amounts to deficiency of service and caused the petitioner mental agony. Hence, the company was liable to refund Rs 6,500 and pay her a compensation of Rs13,000 in six weeks.
