Operation Gaja successful as officials catch elephant
The forest department will train the captured elephant
Vizianagaram: The Operation Gaja was successfully completed as the forest department captured a 12-year-old male elephant, which had separated from its group and entered R Valasa region under Salur forest in Vizianagaram district on Tuesday.
The officials with the help of tamed elephants Jayanth and Vinayak struggled for three hours to capture the elephant. The officials of the forest department from Vizag, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts and also veterinary surgeons, working at Vizag Zoo, were deployed to capture the lonely tusker which has been destroying crops and has been creating fear among the residents of Salur Agency for the past few days. Two elephants, separated from their herd in Odisha entered Salur Agency area and laid waste to the fields and on May 11 one male elephant was electrocuted at Gadipalivalasa area in Salur forest range in the district.
Chief conservator of forest N. Prateep Kumar said the elephant was caught after injecting a tranquiliser and it will be shifted to Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Vizag. Mr Prateep Kumar said that their department will train the captured elephant and will take a decision on shifting it to somewhere either in Chittoor or Odisha.
