KSEB ordered to give power supply to school

The school was established in 1924 by a private management

KOZHIKODE: In an age when schools have smart classrooms and are even wifi-enabled, the 90-year-old Parannur West AMLP School at Narikuni here even lacks electricity! After Deccan Chronicle reported the plight of the school on March 1, three students approached the State Childrens’ Rights Commission.

Now, the Commission has ordered the Deputy Director of Education (DDE) to initiate measures to lay a power connection to the school before the commencement of the next academic year.

“It is a shame that students have to study in the darkness without electricity,” said Commission member, Adv Naseer Chaliyam.

The school was established in 1924 by a private management. The school has been run by the government for the last 15 years following a tussle with the management resulting in the disqualification of the manager.

But still, power has not reached the school. This, despite submitting several applications to authorities right from the KSEB office to the Chief Minister.

As a result of poor infrastructure, students’ attrition rate shot up and currently there are only 25 students studying in standard one to four. The lack of even a filament bulb in the toilet, makes it hard for teachers too.

Headmaster of the school, T.P Kumaran told DC that the children would again approach the Commission in case the order was not complied with.
