Two gangs held, Rs 14 lakh gold, Rs 1.5 lakh cash seized in Tirupati
Police usually wait close to the village to pick up the accused
Tirupati: The police arrested two gangs involved in stealing valuables from the pilgrims after diverting their attention here and recovered Rs 14 lakh worth gold and Rs 1.5 lakh cash on Tuesday.
While members of one gang belong to OG Kuppam in Nagari mandal of Chittoor, another gang is from Siddhapuram in Atmakur mandal. Incidentally, both are notorious being hometowns for hardcore criminals. It is a difficult task for police to nab these gangs. In OG Kuppam there are incidences where women doused kerosene on their bodies and threatened to end their life to discourage police from arresting their men. Police usually wait close to the village to pick up the accused whenever he appears, a police officer said.
Meanwhile, Tirupati Urban SP Gopinath Jetty said that a team of police led by V. Subba Reddy, additional superintendent (Crime), apprehended the 6 members of a gang belonging to OG Kuppam when they were moving suspiciously at Srivari Mettu on Monday evening and recovered Rs 10.24 lakh worth of property including Rs 1.50 lakh cash and Rs 8.74 lakh worth of gold.
The SP said that another team from Tirumala CCS nabbed three members of a gang involved in stealing valuables from the pilgrims on Monday night and recovered gold and two cell phones worth Rs 3.67 lakh.
