Brothers drown in roadside pit
Chennai: Two boys, aged 9 and 6, who went missing from their home in Tirunindravur on Monday, were found dead in a pit dug by the highways department along the Vandalur-Minjur road, on Tuesday. The brothers, R. Rahul and R. Jayakumar, stayed on 10th street, MGR Nagar, in Tirunindravur. On Monday, they left home in the morning to buy things from a ration shop in nearby Prakash Nagar, police investigations revealed.
However, they did not return home even after several hours following which their parents and relatives searched for them in Tirunindravur and the nearby areas. A missing complaint was registered at the local police station later in the night. On Tuesday, at around 1 pm, passersby noticed the bodies of the two boys floating in a pit filled with water along 400 feet road.
The police rushed to the scene on information and fished out the bodies. The bodies were sent to the government hospital for post-mortem where their parents identified them. Police sources said the pit dug by the highways department was left open, in spite of work being completed. The police said the boys’ parents are casual labourers and they were studying at a government school near their home. The Tirunindravur police have registered a case and are investigating.
