Jo says I am a better husband than a father: Suriya

Suriya talks about his new film Rakshasudu, his social service and the bond with his family

In town to promote his upcoming film Rakshasudu, Suriya says, “There’s nothing negative about the title Rakshasudu. The film is not a horror film like Kanchana. It’s a spooky action thriller and there is an element that kids will love.”

“For every film, I want to come up with something new and also take the audience to a new level. I got excited when Venkat Prabhu came to me with this subject,” adds the actor.

Suriya, who has always experimented a lot in his films, says, “I always look at the story first. I don’t do films because the director is known to me or that he has delivered a successful film earlier, it doesn’t work like that. When I like a script, only then I look for a director who can handle it well and execute it perfectly. Then we both try to work hard on it to take it to another level. For every film, we give our best work. Sometimes, we achieve success and sometimes, we may not,” says the actor.

Suriya’s brother Karthi has already appeared in a Telugu film with Nagarjuna. When asked whether he will be seen in a Telugu film soon, he laughs and says, “Karthi has gone ahead and done a Telugu film with Nag sir. I know it’s a good story and am hoping that he will be successful here. About my Telugu film, I had actually committed to a director before Karthi, but the project got delayed.”

About his wife Jyothika’s comeback with 36 Vayadhinile, he says that he is happy that the film got a good response. “Many people appreciated the film. They say that though it is a woman-centric film, men should watch it,” he says. Asked whether Jyothika would continue acting, he says, “She should, and her next film could be better than this one. She is not in a hurry and is waiting for the right content.”

When asked about his family and how he spends time with them, Suriya says, “Jo always says that I am a better husband than a father. So I am trying to be a better father.”

The actor is also into social service with his Agaram Foundation that takes care of education of underprivileged children. “I believe in education and an educated person can take care of an entire family. So as a celebrity, I am giving a helping hand to deserving kids. It’s not about money, it’s about trust. There are nearly 8000 volunteers spending their free time for this trust and a 250-member core group is also there,” says the actor.

The inspiration for this is his father. “My dad comes from a remote village and he got help from a person from the same village. With that person’s help, my dad managed to come out of that village and then tried his hand in films. Today, we are all here because someone helped my dad. So with that inspiration, I started this foundation and am helping the kids with their education,” says the actor.
