Visually challenged students score big

Limitations do not limit the visually impaired students who topped the PU results that were announced on Monday. Yallapa Hulaganavar, student at Samarthnam trust, an NGO for the visually impaired and underprivileged, surpassed all expectations when he scored 80.83% by scoring 409/600 in the II PUC Arts stream.

Son of a farmer who passed away a few years ago, visually impaired Yallappa has depended on the Samarthanam trust all his life to get an education. Throughout his life, Yallapa has fought hard to get scholarships from the government, only to be disappointed. Unlike others who have books, laptops, phones to use, all that he had were cassettes with voice recordings of his classes.

Yallappa told Deccan Chronicle, “The state government hasn’t provided any Braille books to study with”. He aspires to become a lawyer and to fight against injustice, for the accessibility for the blind and to be successful to reach out and reduce the plight of the visually impaired. He has been trying to get financial help from the state government for the last 6 years with a hope to secure his future. He expressed his happiness saying that the only reason for his success was his strong will and determination which helped him compete with the other students.
