Mumbai: After fighting death for 42 years, Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse who was brutally sexually assaulted at KEM Hospital and had been in a vegetative state since then, died at 8.30 am on Monday in the hospital’s ICU. She had contracted pneumonia last week following which she was transferred to the ICU last Friday.

“We tried our best. Though she was showing progress till Sunday night, she suddenly gave up. The cause of her death is a heart attack. We had hopes that she would make it this time too as her recuperation was working very well. Our prayers are with her,” said Dr Avinash Supe, dean, KEM Hospital.
