Rash driving kills 135 in 4 months
Lack of awareness on risk of speed driving leads to fatal mishaps
Vijayawada: Rash driving is prevalent on city roads even as police, transport department and NGOs are striving to bring down the number of mishaps. Motorists, particularly, youngsters are often found speeding on roads putting not only their lives at risk but also that of others on the road. Rash and negligent driving killed as many as 135 persons and left 621 persons grievously injured in the first four months of 2015, which put the rate at one death a day.
While the number of fatal accidents is 126, the total accidents that occurred in the same period is over 600 and a majority of them are caused either due to negligent and rash driving. Police dealing with accident cases consider the rise in number of accidents is due to lack of awareness on road safety and the dynamics of speed to which a large number of youngsters and auto-rickshaw drivers fall prey. Lorries and other heavy vehicles moving through the city roads are another reason for the rise in road accidents.
“A majority of the youngsters using high-speed motorcycles do not know how to control the vehicle at very high speed. They assume that they can control it but fail to do it when it reaches top speed leading to fatal accidents,” said a senior police officer.
Earlier, the city traffic police used to counsel youngsters using high capacity motorcycles once in a month. “We are planning to visit schools and colleges after reopening and hold camps on road safety. It is important to impart knowledge about basic road safety to students and it will make a difference on roads in the future,” the police official said.
