Hyderabad cops clean streets and hospitals

Policing not affected, move aimed at inspiring citizens

Hyderabad: Many city cops are now not seen with lathis but with broomsticks and shovels. Much before the ‘Swachh Telangana-Swachh Hyderabad’ campaign, which started on Saturday, several hundred cops had gone out on to the dirty streets and hospitals to clean and inspire citizens to keep the city clean. Senior police officials say the community policing is helping them to cut down crime by bridging the gap between citizens and the police.

While Cyberabad police officials have adopted 60 hospitals, Hyderabad cops have adopted all the major hospitals and social welfare institutions in the twin cities for their cleaning drive. With SHOs, ACPs and DCPs in charge of the adopted establishments the cops keep a constant watch and keep them clean.

The government had asked the police to initiate the programme as part of community policing. Last month the police started a cleaning drive right from police stations and extended it to government establishments. “With this kind of initiatives the police can get close to communities and bridge the gap between cops and citizens. It helps us to prevent crime,” said Hyderabad police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy.

Senior officials said that cops should do their bit to keep Hyderabad clean. “Police officials can inspire commoners. By constantly interacting with the public bad habits like littering and public urination can be ended,” said Cyberabad police commissioner C.V. Anand. In the ‘Swachh Telangana-Swachh Hyderabad’ drive started on Saturday, ministers, elected representatives, officials, businessmen, institutions and the public have a vital role. The police has emerged as the single largest player in the campaign.
