Chennai: More than 10 days after a helmet-borne man threatened a police inspector’s wife at knife-point inside the Ashok Nagar police quarters, on Friday, the anti-gangster squad arrested M. Sivakumar (37) of Kodambakkam, a history-sheeter, in connection with the threat. Sivakumar has 32 cases pending against him at several police stations in the city, including cases of murder, arson and car-jacking, among others.
“In 2012, he was arrested for murdering another rowdy, Rajendran, after the duo had a fall-out over sharing the booty,” said a police officer. On May 3, Sivakumar, wearing a helmet, entered the quarters of anti-gangster team inspector M. Sivaram Kumar and threatened his wife S. Sivakami after Kumar had left home. Brandishing a knife, Sivakumar threatened her of dire consequences if her husband did not stop what he was doing and even said he would not hesitate to kill her husband.
When Sivakami raised an alarm, a few other residents rushed out of their houses to catch the man. However, escaped on his bike after which Sivakami filed a complaint with the Ashok Nagar police.
The police said Sivakumar could be part of a gang involved in the smuggling of red sanders, as the inspector was part of a team that seized 3 tonnes of red sanders, worth '5 crore, from a carrom board-making unit in Jafferkhanpet a fortnight before the incident. The arrested Sivakumar was remanded in judicial custody.
Sivakumar was convicted in 10 cases and detained under the Goondas Act four times, the police said, adding that he used to roam around posing as an advocate and even robbed 15 sovereigns from a jeweller on C.P. Ramasamy road two weeks ago.
