Traffic offenders pay Rs 5.91 crore fine in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: As a part of a special drive to bring down fatalities in accidents, the state police has slapped more than Rs 5.91 crore in fines on over 4.1 lakh traffic offenders within a month.
A total of 14,870 people were fined for driving under the influence of alcohol and 17,711 people were fined for talking on mobile phones while driving.
More than 24,400 drivers were fined for speeding and over 33,000 booked for not wearing seatbelts. Sun control films were ripped off from over 1,600 cars and the owners were fined
More than 1.5 lakh two-wheeler riders were fined for riding without helmets. Over 4,700 people were booked for overtaking from the wrong side and 7,541 arrested for not dimming their headlights for oncoming vehicles.
Nearly, 6,617 people were booked for driving without licences and 779 fined for jumping the yellow line.
In actions targeted mostly at commercial vehicles, 11,400 vehicles were fined for carrying load beyond permissible capacity and over 1,604 drivers were booked for not wearing their uniforms.
“As per statistics, the accident rate in Kerala remains high as 362 people died and 3,759 injured in 3,185 mishaps last month. The drive will continue,” Traffic ADGP Arun Kumar Sinha said in an official statement.
