Rape videos on the Net: CBI sleuths take accused to Delhi

Court grants four-day transit remand for city cab driver

Bengaluru: Koushik Satyapal, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation from the city for allegedly uploading rape videos on internet and social networking sites, was produced before the Special CBI Court here on Friday and transit remanded for four days in police custody.

The CBI special team, including officials from Delhi and West Bengal, has taken the accused in a train to Delhi that would reach the capital on Sunday, said CBI sources.

Earlier on directions of the Supreme Court, the CBI officials had taken over the case, related to the uploading of three alleged gang rape videos, registered at Kotwali police station in Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh. They verified the IP address, from where these videos were uploaded, and traced it to Mahadevapura in Bengaluru.

The CBI officials used sophisticated cyber forensics software and sought assistance of various Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to track the accused. Koushik was picked up from his relative’s house in Mahadevpura on Thursday. A search was conducted at the residential premises of the alleged uploader and the digital evidence exhibits used in uploading the video clips on to the internet was discovered and recovered from his possession, the CBI said.

According to CBI sources, Koushik, in his late 20s, was working as a driver in Bengaluru with an agency that hired drivers. He is a native of Odisha and had come to the city in January 2013. He is 12th standard pass and an ITI diploma holder. He was staying at his relative’s house in Mahadevpura. He used to download and upload porn material on his computer. The CBI sleuths have recovered 470 porn clips from his computer and its hard drive. Software used for downsizing and editing bulky videos were also found installed on his computer, added the source.

Investigations so far reveal that he downloaded the gang rape videos from various websites, including YouTube and WhatsApp, edited and uploaded them on other websites, claimed CBI sources.

Koushik was arrested for uploading videos of three separate gang rape that happened in Sitapur, UP; West Bengal and Odisha.

Koushik Satyapal was produced before the Special CBI Court at 12:26 p.m. when the judge asked him in English to which he replied “I don’t know English.”

The judge then asked him in Hindi what did he do, for which he replied “I downloaded and uploaded video clippings.” Then the judge asked whether what he did was right or wrong to which he replied “It was wrong.” The judge then asked the despite knowing it was wrong, why did he do it. The accused kept mum.
