Chennai: A 23-year-old youth was robbed at knife-point by a gang posing as policemen near the railway track between Pazhavanthangal and St Thomas Mount railway stations on Wednesday night.
After the agonising incident, he had to run from pillar to post till Thursday night before getting his complaint registered after various police stations chased him away, citing jurisdiction issues.
It all started when S. Nagendran, a native of Theni, was returning to his room in St Thomas Mount. He was robbed at knife point by a three-member gang who claimed that they were policemen patrolling the area.
The three checked the youth who was walking back to St Thomas Mount area after getting down at Pazhavanthangal station from the EMU around 11.30 pm. After taking away his cell phone and Rs 4,000, they escaped on a bike. After reaching the room, his brother told him to lodge a complaint with the police. On Thursday morning, Nagendran, who had recently started working in a private firm in Ashok Nagar, went to the Pazhavanthangal police station to lodge a complaint.
There he was advised to go to Tambaram railway police station as the incident happened near the railway track. He went to Tambaram railway police station where he was told, “The incident seems to have happened in the jurisdiction of Egmore railway police station.” He was advised to approach Egmore railway police station.
When he went to Egmore, the policemen there sent him back to Tambaram railway police station, saying that the incident could have taken place near the Pazhavanthangal railway station so the jurisdiction could be only under Tambaram limits.
According to Tambaram railway cops, they finally registered a complaint on Thursday evening and would transfer the case to Egmore because after spot inspection, they found that the crime had ‘actually’ happened in Egmore railway police station limits. When contacted, S. Velmurugan, brother of Nagendran, said except for the confusion over jurisdiction, the police were very understanding and cooperative.
