Film director, 3 others held for cop assault
Chennai: Four persons including a Kollywood director were arrested by K.K.Nagar police on Thursday for assaulting traffic Inspector S.Sargunam last Saturday on May 9. The 50-year-old Inspector was chased and assaulted after mob fury broke out, following the death of a teenager in an accident on 80 feet road, Saligramam, for which traffic police were blamed. Videos of the incident started circulating on the social media and K K Nagar cops who are said to be waiting for instructions from their higher ups arrested the four of them on Thursday.
The main accused were identified as K.Baskar (44), who recently directed a Tamil movie. and Ashok Kumar (30), an auto driver and a real estate broker, both residents of Vijaraghavapuram off 80 feet road. “Baskar is a dancer in the film industry and has also directed a movie, Kaala Kattam which was released earlier this year,” K.K.Nagar inspector, G.Chandru said. The other two accused, Munusamy (49) of Velachery and Malaisamy (26) of Maduravoyal work as loadmen in a civil supplies godown. K.K.Nagar police said that they were picked up based on evidence from video footage and eyewitness accounts.
Inspector Chandru added that they are in the process of identifying the other accused who assaulted a uniformed officer while on duty. A case was filed under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 332 (causing hurt, deterring a public servant from discharging his duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) and section3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. They were remanded to judicial custody.
