Revival of cancer centre on the cards for Kozhikode medical college hospital

An estimate of Rs 4.5 crore has been prepared to build up infrastructure including a road

KOZHIKODE: The district panchayat is joining hands with the Kozhikode medical college hospital (MCH) to set up a cancer centre at Thengilakadavu in Mavoor, as an annex of MCH.

The proposal is a part of the district panchayat’s programme to stamp out cancer from the district in a phased manner.

The seven acre land and a building had been donated by Dr Fathima to the government to set up a full-fledged cancer care centre eight years ago. But nothing had progressed since then and the land was overgrown with weeds.

“We want to set up a full-fledged cancer treatment centre there. An estimate of Rs 4.5 crore has been prepared to build up infrastructure including a road. For furniture and other essentials, another Rs 60 lakh has been estimated,” said district panchayat president, Kanathil Jameela.

According to MCH officials, staff strength of 37 would be needed for the centre with a director, 4 medical officers, 12 staff nurses, 2 pharmacists, 2 lab technicians and 4 nursing assistants. As a part of the programme, a two-phased implementation has been conceived in all the gram panchayats.
