Officials upbeat about lift irrigation scheme

Pattiseema to be ready to use by Jan. 2016, say officials
Rajahmundry: With lift irrigation scheme works across Godavari river in Pattisam village of Polavaram mandal in West Godavari progressing at a brisk pace, the Pattiseema project is slated to be ready for use by January 2016. Irrigation authorities say that as works on major components like laying of underground pipelines, construction of a pump house, installation of a power substation and erection of str-uctures on Indira Sagar Polavaram project’s Right Main Canal are going on speedily, the project may be ready early for supply of water to farmers in Krishna delta and also for drinking water and industrial needs of the upcoming state capital at Amaravathi.
12 rows of underground pipelines, measuring 3.95 km each are being laid to transport water lifted from the river and dump it at a delivery cistern located 1.5 km from the beginning of Right Main Canal (RMC). The water will travel a distance of about 174 km and will be released into upstream Krishna river at Prakasam barrage near Ibrahimpatnam. Though the RMC is designed to carry nearly 17,000 cusecs of water, only 8,500 cusecs will be released through the lift scheme.
The RMC has cement-concrete lining on the bed and also inside on either side of the bunds and this prevents seepage of water into the ground during its flow from the inlet to the end point. A pump house is coming up at Pattisam village with 24 pumps to lift water from the river when there are floods. Authorities say that water will be drawn into the lift scheme only when water level surpasses 14 metres height at Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at Dowleswaram.
A power substation with 220/11 kv capacity is also coming up shortly. Pattiseema project irrigation superintending engineer V. S. Ramesh Babu said, “Works on all major components of the project have started and we are confident to complete the project by January next.”
