Tremors rattle parts of Kochi
KOCHI: A low intensity tremor was felt in some parts of the city on Tuesday, after the earthquake that rocked north India, triggering panic among people residing in high rise buildings.
Following the tremors, which lasted a few seconds, people rushed out of their flats and offices. Employees of the Kerala State Housing Board (KSHB) office at Panampilly Nagar also ran out of their offices.
The Justice G. Sivarajan Commission probing the solar scam stopped its sitting for the day after the aftershock of the tremors. The sitting was at the KSHB building. Chief whip P.C George and advocates immediately came out of the building after feeling the tremor.
People were scared and were not ready to return to their offices fearing further tremors. District control room officials said that it was just a vibration which was felt at the stations at Pathanamthitta and Idukki. “Reports of aftershocks were reported only from Panampilly Nagar area. Since the phenomenon was very mild there is no need to issue an alert,” an official said.
Several areas in the city like Kaloor, Kadavanthra and Panampilli Nagar experienced the aftershocks of the recent earthquake that shook Nepal.
Meanwhile, M. E Jameela, deputy collector (disaster management) at the district collectorate told Deccan Chronicle that no tremor had been recorded on the seismographs. “Though there have been media reports, but we did not get any calls from the public,” she said.
