Scramble for medical seats in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

Telangana State has about 2,950 medical seats, while Andhra Pradesh has about 6,500

Hyderabad:A dearth of medical seats in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh is forcing students from either side to write both the Eamcets.

Almost 34 per cent of applications for the TS Eamcet medical stream are from Andhra Pradesh and other states, while in the engineering stream, it is just about 15 per cent.

Likewise, the Andhra Pradesh Eamcet had also received significant number of applications, touching almost 30 per cent, for its medical stream exam from Telangana State students.

According to numbers released by the TS Eamcet authorities, about 16,000 students from Andhra Pradesh applied for the engineering exam out of a total of 1.38 lakh applications.

However, for the medical stream, the number touched 27,000 out of 91,000 total applicants. Telangana State has about 2,950 medical seats, while Andhra Pradesh has about 6,500.

But students vie for the top government colleges in both states — Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh — like the Osmania Medical College, Gandhi Medical College, Andhra Medical College and Kakatiya Medical College.

“Because of the negligence of governments over the years, the capacity of government medical colleges has remained stagnant. Students look to join only the government medical colleges. So in such cut-throat competition, students are now forced to write two tests because of the bifurcation,” a senior faculty at Gandhi Medical College said.
