Karnataka: Many transferred cops yet to take charge

Many are trying hard to get their transfers cancelled or get a posting of their choice

BENGALURU: Though the state government has transferred 407 police inspectors, many of them are yet to take charge. It is, however, learnt that many are trying hard to get their transfers cancelled or get a posting of their choice.

The Police Establishment Board (PEB), which decides on transfers of inspectors, ordered transfer of 407 inspectors last week. In the first list, 285 inspectors were transferred and 122 in the second list. Interestingly, some of the transfers made in the first list were cancelled and the inspectors transferred were directed to continue in the previous posts itself in the second list. Also, some of the inspectors, who were transferred to districts, were given other postings.

Though the Chief Minister and the Home Minister made it clear that the officers working in the same district for more than five years will be transferred and no recommendations will be entertained, the changes in the second list have raised doubts whether the PEB has yielded to pressure by some ministers and MLAs. However, police officers lobbying for ‘lucrative’ postings or getting their transfers cancelled whenever there is a major reshuffle, is nothing new.

Sources said that many of the inspectors, who have been transferred, are yet to take charge. “Especially, those who have been transferred from executive posts to non-executive ones are trying hard to get their transfers cancelled or get other executive posts. On the other hand, those who have been working in non-executive posts for years are trying to get transferred to police stations,” an officer said.

An inspector with the CID for the past three years admitted that it was difficult to get an executive posting. “Some officers are serving only in non-executive posts just because they have no political backing or money to get a posting in ‘good’ police station. Though, the government claims no recommendations will be entertained, MLAs want their men to be posted in their respective constituencies. Hence, they exert pressure on the PEB through ministers,” he said.
