Karnataka government ministers to face test after May 16
BENGALURU: The much-talked about assessment of the performance of ministers in the government headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is likely to commence after a rally scheduled for May 16 at Davanagere to mark the completion of second year in office by the Congress government.
Sources in KPCC told Deccan Chronicle that party general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Digvijay Singh, would attend the rally on Saturday. Soon after the rally, Mr Singh is likely to issue directions to KPCC President Dr G. Parameshwar and Mr Siddaramaiah to evaluate the performance of all ministers over the last two years, and to draw up a progress report based on the achievements of their respective departments.
Such reports would help central leaders decide whether ministers should continue in office or make way for new faces in order to tone up the administration, sources added. Sources said Dr Parameshwar had insisted on such an evaluation of performance of all ministers soon after the first anniversary, but was forced to shelve the move following opposition from a section of legislators belonging to Mr Siddaramaiah’s camp as well as litterateurs like the late Dr U.R. Ananthamurthy and Mr Marulasiddarappa.
The recent statement of former external affairs minister S.M. Krishna on the need for evaluation of performance of ministers has come as a shot in arm for Dr Parameshwar to go ahead with this exercise. Mr Siddaramaiah too has favoured it this time.
Besides, many ministerial aspirants and senior leaders have demanded an assessment of performance of all ministers in view of complaints against at least ten ministers. Therefore, Dr Parameshwar had put some leaders on the job to draw up a list of 30-40 questions to be answered by each minister. This would help the party to analyse the performance of each minister.
“Whatever the government wants to do should be done within the next 24 months as the last year in office will be dedicated to drawing up strategies to face the next Assembly elections,” sources added.
