Common counselling to stop seat blocking

Single counselling will be held for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced-ranked students.

Hyderabad: More students are likely to get seats in premier institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology, NITs and Central universities this year, though the capacity is likely to increase only slightly.

A small chunk of seats in premier institutions had been left vacant because of the two counselling systems for JEE Main and JEE Advanced followed till last year. This year, single counselling will be held for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced-ranked students.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority has categorically said that students who have already got admission into the IITs will not be eligible for writing the JEE Advanced.

Since most students appear in both, JEE Main and JEE Advanced, the middle-rankers would often block seats in NITs and IITs in the separate counselling sessions. As the counselling processes were separately held, there was no way to tell if a student had accepted admission elsewhere. Because of this, the next ranked students would lose out.

“Such blocked seats were mostly vacated at the end of the whole counselling process. And the deserving candidate will not wait till then. He or she would have accepted admission in some other institute. Because of separate counselling, the dynamics are vastly changed because it is also a cascading process,” a professor from IIT Hyderabad said.

With common counselling, blocking of seats can be prevented because the options from approximately 80 institutions will have to be selected at the same time.

Essentially a student will be allotted only one seat and not multiple seats. As a result, the number of students who get allotment orders are also likely to increase.
