Light tremors felt in Andhra Pradesh; no tsunami threat
Hyderabad: Light tremors were felt in parts of Andhra Pradesh after 7.3 magnitude temblor rocked Nepal and large parts of east and north India.
The Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) – Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad said no tsunami threat exists for India. "Light tremors were felt in some parts of the states, Delhi, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh," the ITEWC said in its bulletin. Other reports mention teh tremors being felt all teh wya down to Chennai.
The epicentre of the earthquake is in Nepal. Based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, Tsunami threat does not exist for India, the centre said in its evaluation of the quake. "This bulletin is being issued as an advice. Only national/state/local authorities and Disaster Management Offices have the authority to make decisions regarding the official threat status in their coastal areas and any action to be taken in response," it added.
According to the centre, no further bulletins would be issued by ITEWC INCOIS for the event unless additional information becomes available. A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on richter scale with epicentre in Nepal today sent ripples through large parts of east and north India, including Delhi, less than three weeks after the region was struck by a devastating temblor.
