Complain about Chennai Airport on Twitter

More than 40 mishaps involving faulty glass panels and false ceiling

Chennai: In a bid to directly connect with the public, who ultimately are its prime users, the management of Chennai airport has taken a plunge into social networking.

Beset with bad publicity, what with frequent collapses of glass panels/false ceilings at its modern terminal buildings, the airport management took to the world of Twitter on Monday.

Commissioned in 2013, the new terminals (domestic as well as international) cost the public exchequer an estimated Rs 2,400 crore. Yet, more than 40 mishaps involving faulty glass panels and false ceiling have taken place in the airport till now.

Responding to DC’s queries regarding the decision to enter Twitter that has about 300 million monthly active users across the world, airport director Deepak Shastri said, “A lot of interactions are happening on social media. We felt compelled to address certain issues on an instant basis, so as to avoid instances of them being negatively spread in a public forum.”

Emphasising that the measure was just a beginning (the account @aaichnairport has only two followers), Mr Shastri said a feedback mechanism was essential considering the complaints being posted online.

As they receive several criticisms, about people having to wait in long queues in the security hold area, poor trolley conditions, stinking toilets, etc., he said they would welcome proposals for improving the situation.

He said they were working with a consultant to present a concrete proposal to improve the AAI site, with a separate webpage for Chennai airport.
