Firemen die as building collapses in Mumbai

Two died in the Kalbadevi fire, two others, including the fire chief, are battling for life

Mumbai: Two senior fire officers were killed and as many seriously injured when an old building in South Mumbai caved in on them while they were trying to put out flames that had engulfed it, a municipal corporation official said on Sunday.

The mishap took place when the blaze started at about 4.20 pm on Saturday in the four-storeyed ‘Gokul Nivas’, an over-a-century-old commercial-cum-residential building, located in densely-populated Kalbadevi area.

When the flames were being doused, the building which is in a dilapidated condition, could not withstand the force of the water, and crumbled trapping the four under rubble, a Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai official said.

He said, while Sanjay Vaman Rane, assistant divisional fire officer, and Mahendra Desai, station officer, died of asphyxiation, two other officials were rescued, but are in a serious condition at the National Burns Centre in Airoli.
