All eyes on Jayalalithaa case verdict today

The high court will decide on the appeals filed by Ms Jayalalithaa

Bengaluru/Chennai: All eyes are on the Karnataka High Court which is set to pronounce its verdict on former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa’s appeal against her conviction in the disproportionate assets case on Monday.

Bengaluru police expects thousands of AIADMK supporters from Tamil Nadu to arrive in the city to support the party supremo who is on bail after being convicted by a special court.

The high court will decide on the appeals filed by Ms Jayalalithaa and three others against the special court Judge Michael D’Cunha’s September 27 verdict sentencing them to four years in jail and imposing a hefty fine of Rs 100 crore on her and Rs 10 crore each on three others.

An acquittal is sure to enable a big political comeback for Ms Jayalalithaa while an adverse outcome would put a question mark over the future of the AIADMK leader and her party. Women AIADMK workers in Tamil Nadu took out the traditional ‘milk pot spiritual procession,’ lit lamps in temples and offered coconuts as part of prayers for the return of Jayalalithaa as CM.
