‘Abducted’ man safe in custody

He was illegally detained by the cops
Chennai: The 34-year-old HR personnel, suspected to have been kidnapped, was produced at the Guindy police station by a cop duo from Ramanathapuram district on Friday night after having illegally detained him at a hotel in Ekkaduthangal. They reportedly held him at the hotel since Wednesday morning.
The HR personnel, Omar Khayyam, residing at Taramani, was missing since Wednesday morning.
His elder brother, Shamsudeen, an auto driver, reached the city from Madurai on Friday morning after he received calls on his mobile saying that his brother had been kidnapped and the gang demanded a ransom of Rs 3 lakh from him.
They claimed that they had detained him in connection with the interrogation to a friend of his younger brother who eloped with a girl from Ramanathapuram district.
The police said Omar Khayyam’s younger brother Ajees used to stay with him. Ajees’ friend, Vijayaraj, eloped with a girl from a well-off family, following which the cops interrogated Shamsudeen. “I had denied having any knowledge about Vijayaraj then. However, the cop got details of all my family members,” Shamsudeen recalled.
Speaking to DC, Shamsudeen said he was happy that his brother was not harmed by the cop duo. Omar was asked to come to the Chitlapakkam police station and taken around the city on a SUV before he was locked up in a lodge in Ekkaduthangal on the pretext of enquiry.
“The cops released my brother without any further demands only after news of the issue broke in the media,” he added. A relative of the family said the cops have now taken Ajees into custody and are interrogating him to locate Vijayaraj.
