IITs to begin coaching classes again
IITs may re-introduce the year-long preparatory courses for students in the reserved category
Hyderabad: The Indian Institutes of Technology could begin coaching students again. IITs may re-introduce the year-long preparatory courses for students in the reserved category, if the quota remains unfilled at the end of counselling.
Reserved category students would have to score 8.5 per cent marks in the JEE Advanced test to be eligible for the preparatory courses. These students include those from the SC and ST communities and persons with disability among others.
If seats reserved for the students remain vacant at the end of counselling, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority will admit students for the one-year preparatory courses. If students pass the course, they will be admitted to their allotted course of engineering the next year.
A separate rank list for such students will be prepared if the number of reserved category students eligible for counselling is less than 1.4 times the reserved seats. The system was first introduced in 1993 when reserved seats remained vacant.
