Ten activists get eight years rigorous imprisonment in professor's hand-chopping case

The Ernakulam NIA special court on Friday awarded eight years' rigorous imprisonment to 10 Popular Front of India activists, who were convicted in the sensational hand-chopping case, while three others were given two years' RI.
Kochi: The Ernakulam NIA special court on Friday awarded eight years’ rigorous imprisonment to 10 Popular Front of India activists, who were convicted in the sensational hand-chopping case, while three others were given two years’ RI.
NIA court judge P. Sasidharan observed that the convicts, with an intention to commit a terrorist act, had hatched a conspiracy, formed a terrorist gang and carried out the attack. “Their intention was to give a warning that they would not tolerate any others who stand against their belief,” the court observed while awarding the sentence. The court also imposed fine ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 15,000 on the guilty.
The convicted have been identified as Jamal of Kalady (second accused), Mohammed Shobin of Kotha-mangalam (third), Sham-suddin of Perumbavoor (fifth), Shanavas (sixth), Pareeth K.A. of Aluva (seventh), Younus Aliyar (eighth), Jafar (ninth), K.K. Ali of Kothamangalam, Shajeer and Kasim of Aluva.
Three others are Abdul Latheef, Anwar Sadique (34) both of Aluva, and Riyaz of Maradu who were found guilty under section 212 of IPC (harbouring offenders). The court awarded the punishment under section 15, 16 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention act and under 307 IPC. The Ernakulam NIA special court asked the accused to hand over Rs 8 lakh — the fine amount — to Professor T.J. Joseph, the victim.
