Tankers suck colonies dry

The tankers have also damaged the colony roads
Hyderabad: Groundwater has all but disappeared at Sai Ganeshnagar and Tirumalanagar Colonies of Jillelaguda, Champapet, as close to 13 acre of land has been leased out to private tanker contractors who supply more than 150 tankers of water to surrounding colonies. There are 250 households in these two colonies that are currently suffering from acute water shortage.
The tankers have also damaged the colony roads. Earlier, the VRO had seized the borewells. However, after “an understanding,” the operations had restarted. The residents too now depend on these borewells.
P. Suresh Babu, president of the Tirumalanagar Colony said, “There are 120 houses in Tirumalanagar and another 130 in Sai Samratnagar Colony. The 13-acre open land, where the illegal drawing of water is on, is adjacent to the colony and falls under the LB Nagar municipality. No residential permission has been given to this land since high-tension wires run over it. The owner of the land is taking advantage of this. He has permitted private tankers to operate here. They are stealing the groundwater.”
N. Ramlal Naik, vice-president of the colony, added, “The illegal pumping of water is on 24x7 and the water is supplied to private organisations through tankers. Every day, 150-200 tankers are filled (the capacity being 5,000 to 10,000 litres). The tanker traffic is terrible throughout the day; the roads are badly damaged. The water level has drastically fallen and the colony is now forced to depend on the tankers.”
Residents said that earlier, after a complaint, the regional Mandal Revenue Officer had seized the tankers, but, that did not last long. Following another complaint, the Saroornagar MRO will inspect the site next week.
