Indian Air Force's MiG-27 jet crashes in West Bengal, 2 people on ground killed

The aircraft took off from Hasimara airbase and crashed near Alipurduar town

New Delhi: A MiG-27 aircraft of Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed at Tantipara in West Bengal's Alipurduar region on Friday killing two civilians on the ground though the pilot ejected safely.

An IAF spokesperson in Delhi said there were two civilian casualties.

SDO Samiran Mondal said the pilot suffered some injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The aircraft took off from Hasimara airbase at 8:20 pm and crashed near Alipurduar town around 8:30 pm.

Due to the impact of the crash, some of the tin shades of nearby shanties were blown away.

Apart from an IAF team, Red Cross officials have also reached the site.

A court of inquiry has been ordered.
