Chennai: A three-year-old child was killed in a tragic road mishap at IIT Colony in Pallikaranai, on Thursday night. Ruthvee, 3, was travelling with his 17-year-old uncle on a bike when a tipper lorry hit their two-wheeler, killing him on the spot. Ruthvee’s uncle, Selva Ganesh, a class XII student, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital for head injuries. It has been revealed that Ganesh, who didn’t yet possess a motor license, took his nephew out to buy ‘paani pooris’ from a nearby shop.

A Class 12 student and a native of Thanjavur, Ganesh was in the city to spend summer vacation with his sister and was staying with her at VGP Shanthi Nagar in Pallikaranai. On Thursday night, he got news that he had passed his exams. To celebrate, Ganesh took his brother-in-law Sri Ram’s bike for a quick trip to the snack shop. The family have said that Ruthvee insisted on tagging along with his uncle.

“Selva Ganesh did not possess a licence as he was just 17. And since it was a residential neighborhood, the family allowed him to ride the bike,” a police officer said. The accident occurred around 9.30 pm while the two were crossing the Arumuga Nagar junction. Ruthvee was killed instantly.

The police have booked lorry driver Selva Lingam for rash driving. “Since it is a residential locality, the lorry driver should have taken more precaution while crossing the junction,” an official
said. Police are also yet to decide if they will book Selva Ganesh for riding a two-wheeler without a license. “We will take a decision after returns from the hospital. Right now, he is in a serious condition,” police sources said.
