Student held for ‘offensive’ post

Kate was arrested on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till May 9
Pune: An engineering student has been arrested by the city police for making comments with potential communal overtones on a social networking site. According to the cyber crime cell here, 19-year-old Amitesh Singh Kate, a first year engineering student here, posted the comment on May 2, which allegedly could outrage religious sentiments of a particular community.
Kate was arrested on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till May 9, inspector Satish Nikam of Bund Garden police station, where the case has been registered, said on Thursday.
According to Mr Nikam, the student subsequently deleted the controversial post after uploading it, but the cyber crime cell, after detecting his involvement, initiated proceedings against him.
The student has been booked under sections 295(A) (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class) and 153(A) (promoting enmity) of the IPC and section 66 (F) of the IT Act, he said.
Mr Nikam said police were investigating whether Kate uploaded his post after watching the Godhra incident clips on the internet, as mentioned by him while talking to “some people”.
“The matter is under investigation and we cannot say at this stage what exactly influenced him to make the objectionable comment,” the police officer said. Police said there was no confirmation of the student having any affiliation with any political party.
U.P. to set up social media lab:
The Akhilesh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to set up a laboratory to monitor activities on social media. The state feels that some of the posts on the social media are responsible for disturbing the law and order situation.
Principal home secretary Devashish Panda said that the laboratory will be set up in Meerut that has emerged as the focal point of communal trouble in UP. “DIG Meerut zone, Ramit Sharma, showed us a presentation on how to monitor social media while a professor form the DU told us how it is possible to study the posts and counter them before damage is done,” Mr Sharma said.
