High Court relief for Hussainsagar lake

HC suspended operation of an order of the National Green Tribunal restraining GHMC

Hyderabad: A vacation bench comprising Justices Nooty Ramamohana Rao and Justice M.S.K. Jaiswal of the Hyderabad High Court on Thursday suspended operation of an order of the National Green Tribunal, Southern Zone, Chennai, which restrained the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) from draining the Hussainsagar.

The bench granted the stay order while dealing with petitions moved as a lunch motion by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Telangana state government challenging the tribunal order.

The tribunal, on May 1, 2015, had passed an interim order following an application by the Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), represented by Lubna Saraswath. Advocate-general K. Ramakrishna Reddy, arguing for the state and the GHMC, submitted that the GHMC had never undertaken any work of completely dewatering Hussainsagar nor had it undertaken the work of desilting the lake.
