Bengaluru demolitions to resume from today

Nobody will know until Friday morning where and when the crackdown will begin

Bengaluru: After holding off for two days, the bulldozers will be back on Friday! But will they be targeting people's homes built on lake beds, throwing families and their belongings out on the streets? Or will they demolish illegal commercial structures?

Nobody will know until Friday morning where and when the deputy commissioner (Urban) will begin his crackdown, with officials indicating that any tip-off could set off political pressure or a court ordered stay.

Indeed, sources have told DC that the urban administration authorities are determined to reclaim 100 acres of land in the city in all, with Deputy Commissioner (Urban) V. Shankar saying that as per the court's direction the authorities must continue with the demolition drive. The saving grace? This time, residential structures may not be touched.

Sham court

In a move that looks good on paper - but may be as much a sham as courts set up to try rapes on school campus - the state government announced two special courts to try land sharks and the officials who helped them, says Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr T.B. Jayachandra.
