Telangana hunts for idle land
The government is set to reclaim unutilised land
Hyderabad: Successive governments in undivided Andhra Pradesh had allotted 3,276 acre of land in the city since 1960 to as many as 480 institutions and individuals for various purposes. However, a recent survey conducted by the Telangana state government revealed that only 291 institutions and individuals have utilised 2,952 acre of the land and the remaining is either lying unused or has been encroached upon.
As many as 178 institutions and individuals have failed to utilise 292 acre so far and the government has been issuing notices to these institutions to take back the land. But it has been found that only 164 acres can be taken back immediately, as the rest is stuck in legal disputes.
Notices have been issued to 138 institutions/individuals to surrender these lands. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had recently directed the Revenue and GHMC officials to scout for 2,000 acre in the city in different locations to build 2BHK houses for the poor.
However, there is a severe scarcity of government land in the city as large portions were already either auctioned or allotted to different Institutions/individuals over the last five decades.
In this backdrop, officials have launched a hunt to identify government lands that had been allotted but are lying unused. Moreover, some unutilised lands fall under Shaikpet mandal, which comprises posh areas like Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills etc., where an acre costs several crores of rupees.
Official sources in the Revenue department revealed that notices to surrender land have been issued to the Film Development Society in Shaikpet mandal, where 16 acre is lying unused.
They said notices were also issued to SBH to surrender 18 guntas, APCOB for four guntas, besides eight acre in Shaikpet mandal allotted to institutions like Dot Publishers, Balaji, Creative, Maharshi etc. Even government schools and undertakings are not being spared as land allotted to 42 such institutions in the city is lying unused.
The Revenue department will submit a report to the Land Management Authority of Chief Commissioner of Land Administration based on the replies given by these institutions to the notices.
