Salman Khan awarded 5-year jail in 2002 hit-and-run case
Mumbai: A Mumbai sessions court on Monday convicted and sentenced Bollywood superstar Salman Khan to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the 2002 hit-and-run case, where a man had died and four others were injured after coming under his car.
The actor, however, secured interim bail within hours from the Bombay High Court till Friday, and hence could go home on Monday evening instead of being locked up in jail.
The High Court granted interim relief to Khan, 49, on the ground that he had been handed over only a two-page operative part of the sessions court verdict and not a detailed order explaining the reasons for his conviction.
There were around 250 people in the courtroom when judge D.W. Deshpande passed the verdict. Khan’s family members and other well-wishers were also present.
