Karnataka Tourism Department plans to revamp post office into heritage building

In a matter of 15 days, a final decision will be taken and the project will be allotted to a corporate house

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Tourism Department in association with the Postal Department is planning to convert a heritage building at Museum Road into a postal museum. The Tourism Department has been in talks with various corporates. In a matter of 15 days, a final decision will be taken and the project will be allotted to a corporate house under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) scheme.

Satyavati, director of Karnataka Tourism Department said, “We have been working on this for sometime now and have spoken to 10-15 corporates. Soon, we will finalise it.”

Tourism Minister Despande, had earlier expressed that his department was looking to tie up with the postal department for a variety of programmes. The minister said that the postal department had suggested to the tourism department to develop the post office, a heritage building on Museum Road in the city, into a museum as there were many historic moments that the postal department would like to display, which would definitely boost tourism as well.

An official from the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation said, “This is an old heritage building, still under the postal department. The building has undergone some wear and tear. The department did not want to demolish the building or shift it. Besides, the postal department has been a huge industry since the time of the British and there have been many historic moments. The department has many collections of those moments which they would like to put on display. Hence they approached the tourism department.”

He further added, “We are looking for corporates who would like to take up the renovation of the building and do the necessary cosmetic upgradation to turn the building into a museum under their CSR scheme.”
