Andhra Pradesh, Telangana prepare for crucial KRMB meet
KRMB has not finalised the operational manual for different reservoirs
Hyderabad: Telangana and AP are gearing up to stake claim on release of water for the Kharif season at the on the Krishna River Management Board meeting being convened after long on Friday at Jalasoudha here.
The KRMB chairman and member-secretary, both Central officials, would take part in the meeting that is expected to discuss contentious issues over release of waters as well as fixing the protocol and manuals for water release from Jurala, Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar. Irrigation principal secretary S.K. Joshi and engineer-in-chief C. Muralidhar will represent TS while B. Adityanath Das and M. Venkateswara Rao will take up the AP case.
AP has been insisting on the release of water to raise seed beds in 13 lakh acres in the Krishna delta as early as in June first week. The levels at Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar are lower than last year. At Srisailam water stands at 805 ft, against the minimum drawdown level of 834 ft for power generation and 854 ft for irrigation. The level at Nagarjunasagar, is 512 ft, two feet higher than the MDDL of 510 ft.
The KRMB, the regulatory body constituted under the bifurcation Act, has not finalised the operational manual for different reservoirs. The manuals mandate release of water for different purposes and fixes priorities.
There has been no unanimity among the two states. Telangana used to insist that whatever water reaches Srisailam must be released through the power houses so that it can generate power. AP, especially Rayalaseema, depends on Srisailam water through the Pothireddypadu head regulator.
