70 per cent chance of delayed monsoon, says IMD

The monsoon might reach the state after June 15

Hyderabad: The probability is 70 per cent that the monsoon will be delayed this year, K. Seetharam, director (forecasts), IMD Hyderabad Centre, said. The monsoon might reach the state after June 15, he added.

The atmosphere is very dynamic and random currently, Mr Seetharam said adding that “After May 15, when the monsoon touches the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, we will be able to provide a much clearer picture.”

“Only one or two indicators are in favour of a timely monsoon and the rest all have a negative impact as of now,” he added. Apart from a delayed monsoon, as of now, IMD has forecast that there will be less than normal rains this year.

“According to the IMD forecast, the rains will be below normal at 93 per cent with a deviation of (+ or - 5). According to the IITM forecast, the rains will be normal at 91 per cent and a deviation of (+ or - 5),” Mr Seetharam said.

Unseasonal rains cripple city life:

Unseasonal rains accompanied by gusty winds played havoc and disrupted power supply in several areas in the city on Wednesday. Due to the gusty winds, followed by rain, power supply in more than 25 areas got disrupted for nearly four hours and supply was not restored in many places even by 9 pm.

Red Hills, Ramanthapur, Champapet, Chanchalguda, Osmangunj, a few areas in Banjara Hills, Santhosh Nagar, Nagole, Cherlapally, Nandavanam (LB NAgar), RTC crossroads, Jawahar Nagar, are few of the areas from where calls were being received by the fuse-off call centres of the electricity department.

However, with the contractual staff on roll at the fuse-off centres being on strike demanding regularisation, restoration got delayed. Apart from disruption in power, traffic, at several places like LB Nagar, Tarnaka, ECIL came to a halt due to water-logged roads. Hoardings also fell at several places in the city due to the gusty winds.

Met officials said that isolated rainfall has been forecasted for the city and parts of Telangana. Till Wednesday, temperatures at several places in the state were 1 to 1.5º Celsius above normal, but isolated rain occurred at several places. Met officials said that the atmosphere is very random currently.
