Water audit on May 9 in Kochi

Audit to identify gap between demand and supply

Kochi: As part of formulating a water policy for the city, the corporation will conduct a water audit in all 74 divisions in the city. The auditing, the first of its kind by any local body in the state, will be formally inaugurated by State Planning Board member G. Vijayaraghavan on May 9.

Water policy is part of a mega project to ensure water security. A water quality atlas will be prepared for each division which will be a role model for the country to replicate.

The project is being carried out with the support of the Water Institute at SCMS School of Engineering and Technology.

Experts of the institute will provide technical assistance and training to the members of the ‘Kudumbasree’ Mission to conduct detailed survey in corporation divisions.

As part of auditing, the team will prepare a comprehensive list of wells, bore wells, rivers, ponds, rain water harvesting facilities, public taps, ground water level, supply by tankers in addition to the quality and level of contamination of water in the city.

Workers of Kudumbasree will complete the survey in a week and based on the report, the SCMS team will prepare the water quality atlas.

The objective of the water audit is to identify the gap between demand and supply of water for various stake holders in the city.

Dr. Sunny George, director of SCMS Water Institute said that the survey will also verify the requirement of water in the city during the next 10 years.

Mayor Tony Chammany, deputy Mayor B. Bhadra and Dr. G.P.C Nayar, chairman, SCMS Group will also participate in the inaugural function.
