Hand-chopping case sentencing on May 8
Kochi: The NIA Special Court, Ernakulam, will pronounce the quantum of sentences in the sensational hand-chopping case on May 8. NIA judge P. Sashidharan reserved the pronouncement of the sentences after both the prosecution and defence concluded the arguments.
The accused, meanwhile, chose the Kannur Central Jail as the prison for their continued imprisonment. The accused opposed the order finding them guilty and asked the court to reduce the sentences. The court considered the arguments and posted the case for orders.
The court had found 13 men guilty of chopping Thodupuzha Newman’s College lecturer T. J. Joseph's hand as a revenge for preparing a controversial question paper.
According to the NIA, the accused conspired together and a six-member team led by Savad carried out the attack on Joseph and chopped off his right hand and left leg while he was returning home after attending a Sunday mass at a church in Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district on July 4, 2010.
