IPL 8 MI vs DD: Wankhede remains fortress for MI, beat DD by 5 wickets

Rohit Sharma (46), Ambati Rayudu (49) top scored for MI

Mumbai: In what was a thriller of a contest, the Mumbai Indians ensured the Wankhede stadium remained their fortress as they outclassed the Delhi Daredevils, here on Tuesday by 5 wickets. The rain Gods did play spoil sport during the encounter disrupting the momentum of the game but at the end of it all, MI skipper Rohit Sharma (46) and Ambait Rayudu (49) were instrumental in guiding them to the coveted win.

After Lasith Malinga struck in the very first ball sending Mayank Agarwal for a sweet duck, Delhi Daredevils managed to pile up 152 runs for the loss of 6 wickets courtesy a splendid knock from star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh (57), an innings that was laced 7 boundaries and 2 sixes.

JP Duminy has won the toss and Delhi Daredevils have elected to bat.

The comprehensive 23-run victory over bottom-placed Kings XI Punjab at Mohali has given the resurgent MI the perfect shot in the arm to take on Daredevils who have blown hot and cold this season and were beaten convincingly by Rajasthan Royals.

MI can take a lot of positives into Tuesday's game against a rival which is placed one rung above because of a superior net run rate, both having 8 points from 9 games and occupying the sixth and seventh slots after Monday’s games.

Here are the team line-ups

Here's how the action unfolded:

MI: 153-5 (20 overs)

WICKET! Just when MI were relying on skipper Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu for a win, in came in leg-spinner Amit Sharma, who broke the parnership and has given DD a slight edge in the match.

We're back with the MI chase. Ambati Rayudu has joined MI skipper Rohit Sharma at the crease and both these batsmen have a task on their hands.

The match will resume at 11.15 pm IST and there won't be any redcution in overs which is good news for MI.

The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off.

It has really started raining at the Wankhede now and this will probably be a long break.

WICKET! Coulter-Nile has struck yet again for DD and this time Harbhajan Singh departed for just 5 runs.

WICKET! Angelo Mathews has struck just after the short break and it looks like the break has affected the MI batsman's rhythm. Parthiv departed for just 13 runs.

Covers have come off and the players are back on.

Play has been suspended due to rain.

Just when a good chase was on the cards, the rain Gods have played spoil sport yet again.

WICKET! Nathan Coulter-Nile provided DD with the next breakthrough and this time, Hardik Pandya had to walk back after scoring just 5 runs.

WICKET! Delhi Daredevils look to be following the same graph Mumbai did as Zaheer Khan stepped up to the job and sent the in-form Lendl Simmons for a duck in the very first over itself.

DD: 152-6 (20 overs)

WICKET! The only way to get rid of a dangerous Yuvraj Singh was a flying Lendl Simmons. The West Indies player took a blinder to get rid of the DD star all-rounder. Yuvraj departed for a well-played 57 runs.

WICKET! Hardik Pandya, who has replaced Unmukt Chand for this match has just added a wicket to his name that of Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews (12). DD are now half their side down.

WICKET! Harbhajan Singh just loves the Wankhede and this time he has sent Kedar Jadhav (16) back. Bhaji also has finished his spell and what a one it has been. 4 overs, 2 wickets for just 10 runs.

WICKET! It was a pretty ordeinary delivery from Jagadeesha Suchith and at the end of it all, DD skipper Duminy, who was playing a gem of an innings threw his wicket with a silly shot, much to the delight of the MI bowler and his teammates. Duminy scored 28 runs.

WICKET! Harbhajan Singh soon got into the action and just before DD skipper JP Duminy and Shreyas Iyer were looking to take control of the innings after the early loss, he sent Iyer back to join his opener Agarwal. Iyer scored a paltry 19 runs.

WICKET! A dream start for Mumbai Indians and in particular, Lasith Malinga who struck in the very first ball of the match sending DD's Mayank Agarwal back to the pavillion for a sweet duck.

The return to form of struggling opener Parthiv Patel, who made his first half century of the season besides putting on a near-century stand with fellow-opener Lendl Simmons, bodes well for the home team.

MI seem to have hit the right combination after the loss of a few key players due to injury and no-show but will be a tired lot after travelling to Mohali. On the other hand, Daredevils, who had a poor game on Monday overall and fielded woefully, need to regroup quickly and take advantage of the travel-weariness of MI.

Both Delhi captain Jean-Paul Duminy and key all-rounder Angelo Mathews spoke about the need for consistency in their display. "Unfortunately when we win, the next game has not been good. We need to break that pattern. Consistency hasn't been there. If we start winning a couple of games in a row we can turn it around," said Mathews confidently ahead of MI's game.

There's a question mark over the poor run of Yuvraj Singh, who hit Royals' Dhawal Kulkarni for three silken-smooth boundaries in one over, before departing immediately afterwards.

Mumbai, on the other hand, go into the game with their tails up but are aware of the pitfalls as another defeat could scuttle their qualifying hopes. They have a very good middle order in place to take advantage of a good start. Death bowlers in Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga and New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan, besides the wily and experienced Harbhajan Singh, can strangle the scoring in the middle overs.

In short, Daredevils have a huge task in front of them to stop MI's winning run and resurrect their own qualifying hopes.
