12th standard student in Tamil Nadu develops app for engineering aspirants

The app instantly calculates and gives the cutoff marks

Coimbatore: TNEA Counsellor, a mobile application by a 12th standard student is ready before the results of higher secondary examinations are declared. The app is free of cost and is available in all android phone versions of 4.2 and above. Fiona Victoria of Vidya Niketan school, who is expecting her results soon, started working on TNEA Counsellor application right after her plus-two exams got over. “It took me three weeks to develop this app. Last year I joined computer classes to learn a bit of coding. I thought of doing this because we do not have any such application to know cutoff marks,” she told DC.

She is not a computer student but is always interested in coding. Last year she developed a gaming app as a trial. This free smart phone app will guide the Tamil Nadu engineering admission for students of 12th standard in order to pursue their further education in the field of engineering without any hitches. The app is designed in such a way that students can easily choose their desired engineering course in a college of their choice. It gives an idea for the students to know, where they would land even before the results are out.

How it works: Once the plus-two student’s physics, chemistry and mathematics score (PCM) is entered, the app instantly calculates and gives the cutoff marks. After this, the required course, district preference and the community is asked, for which a number of college suggestions are given, depending on the calculated cutoff.

The course wise, cutoff wise, district wise and college wise listings are also available. “At present, the 2014 cutoff mark at various Engineering Colleges/courses under Anna University serves as the benchmark. In future, there will be yearly updates. This app will be available in tablets, and will have a website with similar features,” said Fiona.

She hopes to come up with many more education apps for students. “Next I would like to bring apps based on question papers from all the subjects and also one word questions in the form of quiz in four main subjects, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology,” she added.
