Bengaluru district-in-charge minister to BBMP: Desilt Varthur Lake

Varthur Lake was receiving filth and affluents from nearby water bodies

Bengaluru: Soon, residents of Whitefield will have some respite with work set to begin on Varthur Lake to prevent sewage from entering the lake. Following the recent froth formation in the lake, Bengaluru district-in-charge minister Ramalinga Reddy visited the lake on Monday.

On noticing that Varthur Lake was receiving filth and affluents from nearby water bodies, Mr Reddy informed BBMP officials to immediately take up work to clear the lake. He told reporters that BDA officials will begin clearing the lake and water jetting will be carried out in the next two days to clear the foam. About Rs 200 crore is required for purification of 60 lakes and a proposal would be sent to the state government for this, he said.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, BBMP administrator T.M Vijay Bhaskar said work to ensure free flow of sewage will begin immediately. “Mr Reddy has ordered an increase in the height of the bridge near the lake to facilitate free flow of sewage. This too will be carried out,” he said.

Mr Vijayabhaskar added that construction of two sewage treatment plants is going on to prevent raw sewage from entering the lake. He said that of 500 MLD sewage only 350 MLD was being treated, while the remaining was raw sewage. “The Bellandur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 90 MLD and another plant with a capacity to treat 60 MLD sewage will treat all raw sewage directly entering the lake. Both STPs will be fully operational by September 2016,” he said.
